About this job

The freelance interviewer's ultimate aim is to conduct face to face interviews. After completing initial training a freelance interviewer's work will involve:

  • Attending project briefings
  • Using a laptop computer to download addresses via a landline telephone
  • Locating, planning routes and travelling independently to these addresses
  • Registering your presence as working in the area at a local police station
  • Making contact by visiting allocated addresses. NatCen does not allow interviews to be arranged via the telephone. This initial face to face contact is to introduce the research project and either conduct the interview immediately or establish an appointment to conduct at a later date. This first visit may result in not contacting anyone at the address and therefore further visits would need to be made
  • Conducting interviews using appropriate equipment (laptop, paper questionnaire) and project related materials, all provided by NatCen
  • Completing administration tasks at home and transmitting to Operations Department Attending training and regular supervision as and when required
  • Being available for regular contact by telephone with management team A commitment to NatCen's policies and quality procedures for freelancers

Practical requirements

You need to:

  • After acceptance of a project, be willing and able to work an average of 20 hours a week and be able to work a 6 hour day when necessary (excluding travel time)
  • Be willing and able to work evenings and weekends
  • Have the right to work in the UK and documentation to support this
  • Have a fixed line telephone
  • Have the ability to travel independently to addresses. If using a car as your mode of transport a valid driver's licence and insurance for business purposes is required
  • Be able to carry a laptop (3kg) and necessary equipment
  • Have a good standard of written and spoken English for use in a business environment
  • Provide references and be eligible for satisfactory disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau
