Care and caring

About this study

The aim of this study is to find out about the care and support used by adults who employ their own care and support workers, or employ care and support for another adult.

Current policy aims to give adults more control over the care they receive. Through direct employment adults can tailor their care and support to meet their needs.

As a separate study, we would also like to interview care an support workers to find out more about skills, experience and training among care and support workers.

The study is commissioned by Skills for Care who establish standards and develop training for adult care and support workers throughout England.

Potential policy impact

Information from the study will be used to develop a social careworkforce that meets future needs. This is needed to meet the needs of an ageing population and one in which adults have greater control over the care and support that they receive.

Methods

The study consists of three stages:

  • One adult at each selected household will be asked to complete a short 5-10 minute screening questionnaire.
  • Adults who directly employ care will be asked to take part in a face-to-face interview.
  • Care and support workers will be asked if we can contact them at a later date to see if they are willing to take part in a telephone interview.
